Michael Johnson
General Manager

Mr. Johnson, with more than 20 years experience, is a certified government financial manager, as well as a member of The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, The Alabama Society of Certified Public Accountants, The Government Finance Officers Association, and The American Water Works Association. Johnson manages several departments within the utility including accounting, finance, human resources, information technology and customer service. Before joining the Birmingham Water Works Board he served as director of finance for the city of Birmingham. Johnson earned a Master of Science degree in taxation from National University and a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa.







Iris Fisher
Assistant General Manager of Finance and Administration

Iris Fisher brings 22 years of accounting, finance, and administrative experience to the BWWB. Her background experience includes financial statement preparation, financial analysis, budgeting, payroll, human resources, customer service, collections, purchasing, tax preparation, auditing, investing, internal controls, strategic planning, talent acquisition, managing cash flow, asset management, inventory control, and various financial software systems. After earning her bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the Alabama State University in 1997, Fisher continued her studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, earning her masters degree in 1999. She started her career as a Staff Accountant for HealthSouth Corporation before becoming Staff Auditor for Ernst & Young LLP. In addition to her previous tenure at the BWWB, she has served in a variety of other financial roles including Financial Officer for the University of Alabama Health Services Foundation, Chief Financial Officer for Diversified Supply, Inc., and Chief Financial Officer for Amsource/XcelHR. Her most recent position was for Mercy Care Services as Director of Financial Services. In addition, Fisher is a board member of the UAB Accounting Advisory Board as well as a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. She is a former board member for NRS Community Support Corporation, former treasurer for Woodlawn Business Advisory Board, and a former committee member of the Governmental Accounting & Auditing Forum.




Derrick Murphy
Assistant General Manager of Engineering and Maintenance

Murphy was raised in the Ensley community of Birmingham, Alabama. Along with his Master of Engineering-Construction Management from The University of Alabama at Birmingham, He brings over 17 years of experience in the water and wastewater industry. Murphy provides a diverse work background in managerial, leadership development, high level project management, and water system engineering services experience in the Southeast region. He has participated in capital improvement planning, facility process improvement, work flow optimization, and performance enhancement within Birmingham, AL, Gwinnett County, GA, and Memphis, TN. Outside of his passion in the water resource industry, Murphy serves as an elected official on the Hoover City Council. Prior to that election, he was appointed as the President of the Hoover Board of Education. Furthermore, Murphy shares whole heartily with the mission of the Birmingham Water Works in his commitment in “providing the highest quality water and service to our customers and our entire service area.”




Jeffrey Thompson
Assistant General Manager of Operations & Technical Services

With more than 29 years of experience in the private and public sectors of the water industry, Jeffrey Thompson brings an engineering expertise and leadership acumen to his role as the newest Assistant General Manager - Operations & Technical Services for the Birmingham Water Works Board. Thompson earned his bachelor degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Central Florida. Starting his professional career as a Water Resources Engineer for The Walt Disney Company, Thompson has served in several utility and executive capacities including Deputy General Manager of Providence Water in New England, Deputy Utilities Director of Cocoa, Florida’s utility and most recently as Director of NMB Water, the second-largest regional utility in Miami- Dade County, Florida. Over the course of his career, Thompson has led the development of multiple utility Strategic Master Plans and has chartered and directed over $1 billion in capital projects and programs. He also has extensive experience with water supply planning, wellfield development, and the planning, design, construction, and operation of water treatment plants, potable transmission and distribution mains, collection systems, wastewater treatment facilities and reclaimed water distribution systems. His background also includes significant experience with utility emergency planning and preparedness, facility security, advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) deployment, implementing Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), Asset Management Systems (AMS) and other technologies, hydraulic/water quality modelling, water/wastewater regulatory permitting and compliance. In addition, Thompson has experience overseeing laboratories, utility customer service, billing, and utility finance. He also has led efforts pertaining to revenue sufficiency, rate setting, obtaining grants, and administering State Revolving Loans, as well as successfully lobbying for and obtaining a $126 million Water Infrastructure Financing & Innovation Act (WIFIA) loan from the US EPA in 2018. Thompson is a second-generation Floridian who was born in Orlando with grandparents from Alabama and Georgia.
