2012

The Birmingham Water Works Board was awarded the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies’ (AMWA) Platinum Award for Utility Excellence, a coveted award in the water utility industry, for exceptional performance.
 
 
 
Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) awarded its Optimized Plant Award to Putnam Filter Plant and Carson Filter Plant for excellence in operations that maximize public health protection. 
 

2011

The Alabama Water and Pollution Control Association (AWPCA) awarded Western and Putnam Filter Plants with its Award of Excellence for operations achieved during 2011. 

 

AWPCA presented the BWWB with the Best Operated Plant Award for the outstanding operation in their Distribution System.

 

AWPCA presented the BWWB with its Three Year Award for Best Operated Plant for consecutively achieving outstanding operations in the Distribution System. 

 

The Partnership for Safe Drinking Water awarded Carson Filter Plant the Five-Year Directors’ Award for exceptional operations leading to greater water quality.

 

2010

The Partnership for Safe Drinking Water awarded Putnam Filter Plant the Five-Year Directors’ Award for outstanding operations leading to superior water quality.

 

ADEM presented Western Filter Plant with the Plant Optimization Award, which is based on excellence in operations that maximize public health, for the seventh year. 

 

ADEM presented Putnam Filter Plant with its Four Year Optimized Plant Award for consistently surpassing regulatory requirements for water quality and providing safe drinking water for customers. 

 

The Alabama Water and Pollution Control Association (AWPCA) presented Carson, Putnam and Western Filter Plants with its Award of Excellence for efficiency in water delivery. 

 


2009

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention presented the BWWB with its Water Fluoridation Quality Award for consistent, high-quality water fluoridation. 

 

 

 

The Western Filter Plant earned the Alabama Department of Environmental Management’s (ADEM) Plant Optimization Award based on excellence in operations that maximize public health, for the sixth consecutive year and received a
Certification of Recognition for Disinfectant by-Products.

 

The Alabama Water and Pollution Control Association (AWPCA) presented its Award of Excellence for efficiency in water delivery to both Carson Filter Plant and Putnam Filter Plant. 

 

Putnam Filter Plant also received ADEM’s Three-year Optimized Plant Award for consistently exceeding annual regulatory requirements and excelling in providing safe drinking water for customers.

 

2008

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) presented the BWWB with its Safe Drinking Water Act Excellence Award, its most prestigious honor, for region 4.

 

BWWB’s Putnam Filter Plant received the Alabama Water and Pollution Control Association (AWPCA) Award for Best Operated Surface Water Treatment Plant in the 20 to 30 million gallons per day (MGD) category.  

 

BWWB’s Carson Filter Plant received the Award of Excellence from the AWPCA. The BWWB’s Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) Master Planning Project received the Global Honour Award for Planning from the International Water Association for excellence and innovation in water engineering projects. 

 

Western and Putnam Filter Plants were awarded the Alabama Department of Environmental Management’s (ADEM) Area-Wide Optimization Program (AWOP) Optimized Plant Award.

 

2007

The Director’s Award from the Partnership for Safe Drinking Water program of the American Water Works Association (AWWA) was presented to Western Filter Plant for maintaining treatment guidelines that are much more rigid than those required by the EPA.

 

Birmingham Water Works was rated in the top-five water systems for clean water in the nation, according to a study conducted by the University of Cincinnati and published by Forbes.com.
