Consistent Quality from BWWB

Today, most people don’t think about the safety of their water before taking a sip. Before the 20th century, millions of people worldwide died from water-borne illnesses on an annual basis. However, the discovery of disease-causing bacteria promoted the development of more sophisticated treatment processes.

The number one priority of the Birmingham Water Works Board (BWWB) is to provide the highest quality water possible for its customers’ health, welfare and enjoyment. The water system uses the latest technology in water treatment and consistently meets and exceeds state and federal standards for safety and quality.

For common water quality concerns, taste and/or order, discolored water, or particulates; customers should call the Water Quality Operations Department at (205) 244-4381, available 8:00am - 4:30pm.

After hours, please call (205) 244-4000 or (205) 244-4440. You can also visit: https://www.bwwb.org/reportaproblem to report a problem.

Infrastructure Maintenance

The BWWB makes repairs and replaces infrastructure on a regular basis, as part of its capital improvement program. This is to ensure that contaminants do not build up in the lines leading to homes and businesses so that water quality remains high.

Fire Hydrant Flushing

Hydrant flushing is necessary to make sure adequate flow and pressure is available for fire protection and service to your home. Flushing is also done to remove sediment from water mains in order to maintain water clarity and quality in the BWWB’s distribution system. Click here to learn more about hydrant flushing.

Water Quality Report

The BWWB and water utilities across the U.S. are required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to distribute an Annual Water Quality Report to customers. This Consumer Confidence Report, or CCR, details the water quality of a water system and outlines contaminants and their levels in drinking water.
