The water industry continues to change and evolve. The Birmingham Water Works, like other water systems across the U.S., continues to deal with ever-increasing regulatory requirements from state and federal governments. The number of contaminants regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has increased by more than 600%, from 18 in 1975 to more than 120 today.
These increasing regulations have placed a tremendous financial and operational burden on water systems, so much so that several water systems are slated to go under because of the increasing costs of some of these regulations.
But at the Birmingham Water Works, we initiated a five-year strategic plan that enables us to meet and sometimes exceed these regulations while dealing with local and customer-oriented issues, ensuring that our customers continue to receive the highest quality water at the lowest possible price.
