Water Works Waterboy

Waterboy

Birmingham Water Works Waterboy initiative encourages those who are participating in various physical activities, whether it’s sports or fitness, to stay hydrated with water.  In past years, the program focused on visiting high school sports teams, marching bands, and spirit squads in the Birmingham area to teach them the importance of staying hydrated on and off the field.

In 2020, the four-week series went virtual with a premiere each Friday via the Birmingham Water Works YouTube channel. Each virtual experience included fitness and wellness experts from the YMCA of Greater Birmingham.

According to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), adequate hydration before, during, and after physical activity is critical to the safe and healthy participation of student-athletes in college sports.  Intense exercise, hot and humid weather, and dehydration can compromise an athlete’s performance and increase the risk of exertional heat injury.

If you would like Birmingham Water Works to visit your school or athletic team to give tips and tools to the students about proper hydration, please email us at [email protected] or call the PR office at 205-244-4224. Thank you.
